How Roof Pitch Affects Slate Selection
I have spent over 30 years in a slate factory in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, packing tiles for roofs from Cornwall to Chicago, and I can tell you the question that comes up more often than any other is not about color or grade. It is about angle. "Will this slate work on my roof?" Before I answer that, I ask one thing back: what is your pitch?
This guide walks through pitch the way an installer actually thinks about it: what the minimum is, how it changes the headlap, and how that flows into slate size, thickness and the final cost per square metre. No laboratory language — just the numbers we use when we cut a quotation.
Before You Start: Read Your Roof's Angle the Same Way Everyone Else Does
Pitch gets quoted three different ways depending on who you are talking to, and all three mean the same thing:
- Degrees — the angle between the roof plane and horizontal. 20° is the classic minimum for slate.
- Ratio — rise over run, written like 5/12 or "5 in 12" (five inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run). Popular in North America.
- Percentage — rise as a percentage of run. Common in central Europe.
Here is the conversion you will actually use, so you can speak to any supplier:

If you only know the rise and run on site, remember the rule of thumb: 5/12 is about 22.5°, and 4/12 is just under 20°. That last one matters, because 20° is the boundary where slate starts to get picky.
Measure before you order, not after. A surprising number of our enquiries come in with "about 25 degrees, I think" — and that one "about" is how an 18° roof ends up holding tiles that were sized for a 30° slope. A two-minute check with a spirit level and a tape measure stops you buying a whole container of the wrong size.
The Minimum Pitch for a Slate Roof
Most national standards and slate suppliers converge on 20° as the practical minimum for natural slate. In the UK, conventional practice is 20° or above; many specifiers push it to 22.5° to keep a comfortable margin. Below 20°, water and wind-driven rain start to work against the tile's natural laps, and you have to throw engineering at the problem — oversized headlap, underlayment upgrades, sometimes a different material altogether.
Two things I have learned from shipping to 30+ countries:
- 20–22.5° is the grey zone. Slate works, but only with the right headlap and the right fixing. If your roof sits here, do not order standard off-the-shelf sizes and hope. Your supplier needs to know the angle.
- Below 20° is not a "slightly trickier" slate job — it is a different conversation. You need longer headlap (often 100mm plus), smaller exposure, and very often a thicker tile. Some manufacturers refuse to guarantee below 20°. We will supply it, but only with explicit fixing and headlap specs.
For context, the European standard EN 12326 and the British installation codes point the same way: the design rules for a minimum of 20°, and where the pitch drops, the laps rise. That is the relationship at the heart of this article.
Step 1: Let the Pitch Set Your Headlap
Headlap is the distance the upper tile covers the one below — the overlap that keeps rainwater out. Pitch and headlap are a straight trade: the lower the pitch, the more the headlap. A 30° roof can get away with 75mm; a 20° roof should not have less than 100mm, and many installers push past that.
The numbers we quote from Jiujiang, which are in line with what European slaters work to, look like this:

Here is a real case from our order book. A customer in the Lake District had a roof reading 17.5° on some slopes — the sort of number that makes a roofer raise an eyebrow. We supplied 500 × 250 mm tiles in 6 mm thickness with a 110 mm headlap, and their installer adjusted the batten spacing to keep the exposure within bounds. Did it work? Yes, but the cost per square metre went up, the weight went up, and it needed a roofer who understood low-pitch slating. That is the honest price of going low.
Step 2: Headlap Determines Exposure — and Exposure Determines How Many Slates You Need
Here is the part that catches everyone out. The visible part of each slate — the exposure — is not a random figure. For a square-cut, plain-edge slate it is:
Exposure = (tile length – headlap) / 2
So for a common 500 × 250 mm slate:
- At 30° with 75 mm headlap: exposure = (500 – 75) / 2 = 212.5 mm → roughly 19 tiles per m²
- At 20° with 100 mm headlap: exposure = (500 – 100) / 2 = 200 mm → about 20 tiles per m²
One extra tile per square does not sound like much until you multiply it across a 300 m² roof — that is 300 tiles and a whole pallet of difference. And if you are ordering 500 × 250 mm slate at 100 mm headlap, most of the time you also step up a thickness, which changes the price per square again. This is why I always ask for the pitch before quoting. The same slate on two roofs can differ by 5–10% in quantity and more in price.
Step 3: Let the Pitch Choose the Slate Size
Low pitches push you toward smaller tiles; high pitches give you freedom to go big.
- 20–25° — the sweet spot for 300 × 250 mm and 400 × 250 mm slates. Short tiles mean short exposure, which means more laps over the same slope, which means less chance for wind-driven rain to find a way through.
- 25–35° — this is where 500 × 250 mm rules. It is the most popular roofing slate size we produce in Jiujiang — roughly 7 out of every 10 tiles we export for roofs — because it balances coverage speed with a clean appearance.
- 35° and above — you can go to 600 × 300 mm or longer. Steep roofs drain fast, and large slates lay quicker, which is why heritage and modern large-format roofs both reach for bigger tiles here.

Step 4: Match Thickness and Fixing to the Pitch
Pitch does not only decide size. It decides how thick a slate you should be thinking about, and how it should be nailed.
- Low pitch (20–25°): choose 6 mm or thicker. Slower drainage means water sits in the laps longer, so a thicker tile resists infiltration and copes with the extra foot traffic a low roof attracts during maintenance. That is why we usually suggest 6 mm here instead of the 5 mm we would recommend on a steeper slope.
- High pitch (35°+): 5–6 mm is normally plenty. Wind becomes the bigger worry than water — larger exposure catches more lift — so check the fixing method.

Wind and snow change the game more than pitch alone. A 30° roof in an exposed Scottish glen behaves differently from a 30° roof in a sheltered English valley. Pitch is your starting point; local weather is the fine-tune.

Slate Roof Pitfalls: The Three Mistakes I See Repeatedly
After 30 years of reading complaints and fixing mistakes, the three problems that keep coming back are all pitch-related:
- Buying the pretty size before measuring the angle. A 600 × 300 mm slate on a 22° roof ends up with either tiny exposure or a headlap that is too small. It is the fastest way to convert a beautiful roof into a leaky one.
- Believing a bigger headlap alone fixes everything. Headlap helps, but at very low pitches you also need adequate fall on the underlayment and attention to the roof geometry — skylights and dormer valleys are where the water finds its way in. Headlap is part of the answer, not the whole answer.
- Ignoring the vertical joints. On shallow pitches the diagonal path of water across the joints becomes relevant. Stagger your vertical joints and keep a full bottom lap — a random stagger is not a style choice, it is a waterproofing choice. That is why slate type and layout matter just as much as the tile itself.
Pitch and Grade: Two Numbers That Must Be Read Together
One last piece of the selection puzzle: pitch should always be read together with slate grade. A high-grade slate (S1 under ASTM C406 or EN 12326) with low water absorption is the right partner for a low-pitch roof, because lower absorption means less water sitting in the laps and better frost resistance in the winter. The explanation is simple, so I will keep it simple: on a roof that drains slowly, every quality number counts more.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum pitch for a natural slate roof?
20° (about 5/12) is the standard practical minimum. Below 20° you need special headlap, smaller tiles and usually a thicker slate — and many contractors will advise against it. Below 18° most suppliers refuse to guarantee a waterproof roof.
Can slate be used on a 15 degree roof?
It is possible with very large headlap (110 mm or more), small slates and careful detailing, but it is an edge case. Water is slow to run off at 15°, so the laps must be generous, the underlayment heavy and the fixing exactly right. Most experienced slaters steer clients to an alternative material below 20°.
Does roof pitch change how many slate tiles I need?
Yes. Lower pitch increases headlap, which reduces exposure, which raises the tiles per m². For a 500 × 250 mm slate, 30° needs about 19 tiles/m² while 20° needs about 20 tiles/m² — and that difference grows with smaller sizes.
