Read this if you only read one section: EN 12326 is a two-part European standard. Every slate standard starts with a roof that leaked. This one started on a cold, wet morning somewhere in northern Europe, where the rain finds every weakness a slate has — and where a single bad batch, sold on a name and a handshake, quietly soaked an attic for twenty years before anyone thought to ask why the certificate didn't match the roof.

That is the problem EN 12326 exists to solve. Not to make slate romantic — no standard can do that — but to make slate measurable: to give an architect in Amsterdam, an importer in Hamburg and a quarryman in Jiujiang a shared language for "how good is this slate, actually?"

But here is the trouble: the standard is written by committees, for committee people. It reads like a contract with a secret dictionary. And in my thirty years in this trade — first in the quarry sheds, then on the export desk — I have watched good buyers misread it, and worse, watched bad suppliers hide behind it. This article is the translation. By the end you will be able to read a European certificate the way a UK building control officer does: the tests, the classes, the two traps, and the one line on every report that decides whether the rest of it means anything at all.

First, the official name — and why the hyphen matters

You will see it written three ways: EN 12326, EN 12326-1, EN 12326-2. They are not typos. They are three different pieces of paper, and the difference is worth understanding because half the confusion in this industry comes from blurring them.

  • EN 12326-1 — the test-methods half. Water absorption, flexural strength, freeze–thaw cycling, chemical composition, thickness, thermal cycling, and the rest of the mechanical and physical tests. If a slate has been "tested to EN 12326", this is the half that actually did the testing. The procedures live here, and most published test reports are produced against it.
  • EN 12326-2 — the spec-and-class half. This is where the results from Part 1 are turned into a classification: performance classes, thickness grades, tolerances, and the requirements a slate must meet to carry the standard's name in a specification. A certificate that references Part 2 only, without the Part 1 test data behind it, is like a trophy without the match — it asserts the result but doesn't show the game.

When someone tells you "our slate is EN 12326 approved," the professional reply is: approved against which part, and show me both. A genuine EN slate carries the test data (Part 1) and the classification (Part 2) as two faces of the same story.

What the standard actually puts your slate through

Strip away the committee vocabulary and EN 12326-1 is a to-do list. It makes a sample of your slate do a series of unflattering things, then writes down what happened. The headline stations, and the honest plain-English reading of each:

Notice what is not on that list: colour, surface texture, "premium feel." The standard is resolutely unglamorous. It does not judge whether your slate is pretty — it judges whether the pretty thing stays intact, dry, and strong for the decades you were promised. That is the discipline to respect, and the discipline that catches a batch of lookalike stone in year one before it becomes year thirty's emergency.

The classification, read without the jargon

Part 2 turns the test results into a label. The vocabulary varies slightly with the edition of the standard, but the architecture is the same everywhere in Europe, and you meet it in every serious specification:

  • The water-absorption classes — the single most useful number in the whole document. It sorts slate by how much water it will hold. The lower, the better: a class with minimal absorption is the one for wet, cold, freeze-thawing markets. The higher classes are still "slate," still legal to sell — they just belong to warmer, drier roofs and simpler projects.
  • The durability / weathering classification — the long-game rating. It combines chemical stability, thermal behaviour and the freeze-thaw story into an overall verdict on how the roof ages. The top class is the one specifiers reach for when they want a century, not a decade.
  • Thickness tolerance — how honest the batch is about its own dimensions. Tight tolerances mean consistent batten lines, predictable weight and a roof that doesn't fight the installer.

Here is the practical frame: Europe's own quarries and the serious exporters all aim at the top of the absorption class and the top weathering class, because that is what the wet, freeze-thawing Atlantic climate of the UK, Ireland, the Benelux and Scandinavia demands. Reading a certificate report like an inspector

Now the skill that separates a buyer from a victim: opening the PDF and knowing where to look. A well-made EN 12326 report is dense, but the whole verdict lives in five places:

  1. The declared classification — the class codes the report assigns, both water absorption and weathering. Write them down, and then compare them with what your specification asked for. If the report's class is lower than your spec's, the debate is over before it starts.
  2. The water absorption value — the number itself, not the class. Below 0.5% is a good roof; below 0.25% is a serious one; above 1% is a warning sign you should have walked away from a while ago.
  3. The freeze–thaw row — cycles survived and weight loss after. Near-zero loss is the gold standard. If the row is missing or says "not tested," then the whole classification has no spine in a cold climate.
  4. The chemical composition — carbonate (or CaO), sulphur, iron. High carbonate plus high sulphur is the red-flag combination that our carbonate article breaks down in full.
  5. The flexural strength — a strength that clears the class requirement with margin is the quiet proof of the material, not just the paperwork.

And then the sixth line, the one that is easiest to miss and most often skipped: the batch number. A certificate describes a sample. The sample has to belong to the production you are buying — the same quarry face, the same season, the same sorting. A report for "our standard product" with no batch reference, from a supplier who won't tie it to a container, is not a certificate for your roof; it is a certificate for a memory.

The inspector's trick: ask for the certificate before you ask for the price. A supplier who emails a real EN 12326 report on the first request, without a sigh, is a supplier who lives with the number every day. A supplier who quotes first and discovers the report later is a supplier whose report is a negotiation, not a fact.

The two traps that catch importers (and how to duck)

In thirty years on the export desk I've watched two errors ruin more slate deals than any geology ever did. Neither is a crime; both cost someone their roof — or their deposit.

  • Trap 1 — a certificate from a previous batch. The report is real, the lab is real, the slate on the paper is real — it's just a different year, a different face, a different container. When you ask for the batch number and the supplier's email goes quiet, you have your answer. Good producers (ours included) test per production and can walk a report to a pallet.
  • Trap 2 — "certificate" that is actually a brochure. A two-page PDF with a logo, a generic description, and "Meets EN 12326" in a footer, without a single measured row, a date, or a lab. That is not a test report. The reliable ask is short: the test methods you used, the number of cycles, the weight loss, and the batch number. If the answer to any of those is "we'll check," walk slower.

EN 12326 and the other standard — one roof, two books

European buyers almost always have a second question next to EN 12326: "What about ASTM C406?" And the honest short answer is that the two books describe the same horse from two stables. Both test the same soul — water absorption, flexural strength, freeze-thaw weathering, carbonate chemistry — and both sort slate into classes (S1/S2/S3 on the American side; the absorption and durability classes on the European side). The vocabulary differs; the roof that results is the same roof.

The practical take: on a modern international roof, the winning slate is the one that passes both, because then it is the same story told twice in two languages — which is exactly what serious specifiers ask for. What a buyer should actually do with this, today

You have survived the introduction to the standard. Now, the only part that pays rent — the action list:

  1. Decide your exposure class first. Your climate and your pitch decide the class you need, not your budget. A rainy Scottish coast and a dry northern Spain are different classes of roof, and the standard says so.
  2. Ask for the EN 12326 test report — with the Part 1 and Part 2 details. And ask for the batch number, and the sample size, and the lab date.
  3. Ask for the water absorption and freeze-thaw figures, in writing, in that order. Those two rows carry most of the roof's future.
  4. Ask for a sample of the actual production. A certificate is a paper; a sample is a fact. Put the certificate next to the sample and see if the sample matches the paper.
  5. Keep it together. EN 12326 is a team of tests. The evaluation guide and the buying guide fill the rest of the picture — surface, weight, sound, packing — the things no standard will ever catch for you.

What is a good water absorption number under EN 12326?

Practically, below 0.5% is a good roof; below 0.25% is excellent and typical of the top class. Above 1% means a slate that holds water — and therefore a slate that will suffer in frost. The class code tells you the official band, but the raw number is what a specifier should ask for.

Does my roof have to be built to EN 12326?

EN 12326 is about the slate product, not the roof installation. You can build a slate roof to it only insofar as you use slate that meets the standard; the roof design, pitch, fixing and underlayment follow national building codes and the manufacturer's installation guidance — the two together are what make a roof last.

Is EN 12326 the same as ASTM C406?

No, but they are cousins. EN 12326 is the European test-and-classification system; ASTM C406 is the American one. Both measure water absorption, strength, freeze-thaw and weathering, and both grade the slate into classes (S1–S3 on the American side).
